Finding a healthcare provider can be hard! Sometimes it can be so stressful and overwhelming that you just continue to put off seeing a provider because the search seems impossible. And sometimes, you don’t know exactly what to look for. Just like any profession everyone is not created equal. Unfortunately there are poor Doctors, Nurse Practitioners, and Physician Assistants. Further more, not every provider will be a good fit for you! I have compiled a list of important things to consider when looking for someone to manage your health and wellness!
They listen to your concerns
Have you ever sat down in the doctors office and they start going through a check list of their scripted questions? It feels like you are talking to an automated computer of questions and responses? Although we all have questions that we likely ask each patient, the visit should be guided by your personal concerns! There is nothing more frustrating than to go into an appointment with things you want addressed and you are never given an opportunity to talk about them! I good healthcare provider LISTENS to what is bothering you and allows that to help guide the visit.
They involve you in the medical decision making process
Although the provider is the expert in medicine, you are the expert of your own body! It is so important that when discussing treatment options, the provider involves you in those decisions. As a Nurse Practitioner I will frequently lay out the different treatment options for the patient and then ask… “What do you think would work best for your body and your life?” If a provider only gives one option and does not address your concerns regarding that option, it is time to look for a new healthcare provider. You should feel that you and your provider are a team! Working TOGETHER to create the appropriate health plan. Team work makes the dream work!
They continue to learn and grow as a provider
Medicine is constantly changing and as health care professionals, it is our responsibility to continue to learn and grow! Doctors, NPs and PAs are all required to complete a certain number of continuing education credits for our licensure, but having a passion for improvement and going above and beyond the minimum should be recognized. Your provider should explore not only pharmaceutical training, but also training on nutrition, supplements, and physical activity.
They can admit when they don’t know!
This one is big for me! I think as healthcare professionals it is easy to fall into the trap of feeling the need to have an answer for every question. We have high expectations to be knowledgeable on multiple subjects that are very complex. No provider knows it all and you want them confident enough to admit it when they don’t. It is also great when they can say “I don’t know the answer to that, but give me some time to research it and I will get back to you!” The most successful providers have a working relationship with different specialties that they can consult and refer out when it is appropriate to do so.
Their practice is not driven by Big Pharma!
Do not get me wrong, I am a supporter of western medicine and I know that the medications we have available have saved lives and improved the health of many. But, I know that they are frequently overused and abused. Your health is multifactorial and all aspects should be involved in the treatment plan. This should include dietary changes, lifestyle modifications, possible supplements and also medications.
It is important to remember, healthcare providers are human just like you. We have bad days and deal with stress and anxiety and are juggling this crazy life just the same. When you find a good healthcare provider, they will work hard to support your health and wellness but no one is perfect! So, go out and find that provider that is right for YOU!
